Well Child Visit Q&A

What is a well-child visit?

Regular well-child visits are a time to meet with a doctor when your child or teen is not suffering from an illness or injury. Well-child visits are a time to focus on necessary preventive care that wards off chronic disease or acute illness. Screenings conducted during well-child visits can also catch potential health issues before they worsen, making healing more likely.

When should I schedule a well-child visit?

Schedule a well-child visit at the following ages:

  • Two to five days
  • One month
  • Two months
  • Four months
  • Six months
  • Nine months
  • 12 months
  • 15 months
  • 18 months
  • Two years
  • Two and a half years

Once your child reaches age three, you can plan annual well-child visits. We also suggest bringing a list of questions or concerns to your child’s well visits and jotting down any information the doctor gives you.

What do you assess at a wellness visit?

During a well-child visit, Dr. Samman evaluates your child’s overall well-being and identifies any concerns you or he may have. He provides information about:

Growth and development

The team at  ADM Parham Pediatrics measures your child’s growth and development during well-child visits, especially in the early years. They compare these measurements against the generally acceptable range for their age to check for delays.

Hearing and vision

Well-child visits also do a basic evaluation of your child’s hearing and vision. Dr. Samman provides referrals to specialists if your child needs additional treatment for hearing or vision problems.

Nutrition

Dr. Samman asks about your child’s nutrition habits to ensure they receive the nutrients they need to maintain good health and a healthy weight.

Vaccines

Well-child visits are an excellent time to ensure your child or teen is current on their vaccinations, including the flu and COVID-19.

Chronic disease diagnosis

It’s appropriate to bring up any concerning symptoms at a well-child visit. These symptoms could indicate the beginning stages of a chronic disease, like asthma or diabetes.

Behavioral health

Dr. Samman inquires about your child’s behavioral and mental health. He may ask teens about behaviors like sex, drug use, alcohol use, or feelings of persistent sadness or uncontrollable anxiety.
